What to Pack for Greece: A Summer Capsule for the Islands

Greece asks very little of a wardrobe, which is exactly why it's so easy to overpack for it. The light does the work. Against all that white stone and impossible blue, the only thing you need to be is uncomplicated — linen, a few soft neutrals, sandals you can actually climb steps in. I have packed for the islands more times than I can count, and every time the answer is the same: less, in one carry-on.

Here is what to pack for Greece in summer — the capsule I actually bring.

The Greece summer capsule

Whites and soft neutrals only

Santorini and Mykonos are built in white and blue; you want to belong to that palette, not fight it. Pack cream, ivory, sand, and one soft print. A ruffled white maxi like the Célestine Ruffled Halter Maxi is the whole trip in one dress — caldera dinners, blue-domed photos, a glass of assyrtiko at sunset.

Linen for the heat

The islands are hot and dry, and linen is the only fabric that makes that pleasant. It breathes, it moves, and it looks intentionally crumpled rather than tired. Everything in your bag should be linen or cotton, nothing that clings.

A boat-day set

There is always a boat day. A relaxed two-piece — something like the Sandrine Halter Top and Wide-Leg Pants Set — throws over a swimsuit, handles wind, and still looks pulled together when you dock for lunch.

One easy piece for the heat of the day

For wandering Oia at noon or a long lazy lunch, you want something you can pull on without a thought. A strapless linen romper like the Hortense Floral Strapless Romper is that piece — cool, forgiving, and it weighs nothing in the bag.

The rest of the list

Flat leather sandals (the steps are real — leave the heels), one pair of dressier sandals for dinner, a swimsuit or two, a straw bag, a linen shirt to throw over shoulders when the evening turns, oversized sunglasses, and SPF. That's the whole bag.

The one-carry-on rule

Island-hopping means ferries, cobblestones, and staircases carved into cliffs. A wheeled case is your enemy. If it doesn't fit in one carry-on you'll regret it by the second island — which is the entire argument for a tight neutral capsule where everything works with everything else.

Frequently asked questions

What should I pack for a summer trip to Greece?

Pack a light capsule of linen and cotton in whites and soft neutrals: two or three easy dresses, a boat-day set, a romper for hot afternoons, flat leather sandals for the steps, one dressier pair for dinner, a swimsuit, a straw bag, sunglasses, and SPF. Aim for one carry-on.

What colours should I wear in Greece?

White, cream, ivory, sand, and soft neutrals photograph beautifully against Greece's white architecture and blue sea. A mostly-white wardrobe with one soft print is the most flattering and the easiest to mix.

What shoes should I bring to the Greek islands?

Flat leather sandals are essential — Santorini and Mykonos are full of stone steps and cobblestones, so skip heels for daytime. Bring one slightly dressier flat or low sandal for dinners.

How much should I pack for island-hopping in Greece?

One carry-on. Ferries, staircases, and cobbled streets make large wheeled cases miserable. A tight capsule in one neutral palette lets you pack light because everything coordinates.
