Iris believes a white shirt should be able to surprise you once, and this is where it does — at the sleeve, where the cotton gives way to eyelet lace and a little light gets through. Everything else is exactly as it should be: the placket clean, the pocket precise, the collar holding its shape through a long day. She wears it open over a slip in July and buttoned to the throat in October, and treats it, correctly, as a wardrobe rather than a shirt. The cotton softens with every wash and never loses its nerve.
