The V-neck opens just so, the smocked bodice gives where it should, and the tiers fall sleeveless and full to the floor. It is partially lined and entirely easy — the dress for the bridal shower, the long lawn, the hour when the light goes gold and nobody wants to leave. She wears it with flat sandals and a drink she's stopped drinking, and looks, as ever, like the calmest person there. Some dresses are an effort; this one is a relief.
